For CMOs and marketing leaders who added Reddit to their SEO, AI search, or community plans in the last year.
Over the last year, many marketing teams added Reddit to their plans for a simple reason. Reddit threads showed up in Google results and in AI answers, so being in those threads looked like a shortcut to visibility.
On October 29, Reddit said it will move to a primarily logged-in experience, starting with tests in select markets outside the US this quarter. Reddit has not named the markets or said what logged-out visitors will see, but it has said the change is coming.
That splits your Reddit plan in two, and the two halves now need different decisions.
Camino5 / Reddit's changing role
Your Reddit plan now has two different futures.
Reddit's move toward a logged-in experience changes how brands should invest in search visibility versus community participation.
The search shortcut
Reddit threads that rank in Google may lose value when search visitors encounter a login requirement.
Expected direction
Declining value
What marketing teams should do
Shift new ranking-focused investment toward useful content on your own website.
The community opportunity
A smaller, more intentional audience may make authentic discussions and direct relationships more valuable.
Expected direction
More focused value
What marketing teams should do
Keep participating in relevant communities and measure conversations and qualified leads.
The strategic shift
Stop treating Reddit primarily as a place to rank. Start treating it as a place to build relationships.
Camino5 assessment based on Reddit's announced login tests. Future search and community impacts are projections, not measured outcomes.
Reddit is choosing logged-in users because that is where its revenue is
The login wall makes sense once you look at where Reddit makes money.
Reddit's Q3 revenue was $895.0 million, and $847 million of it came from advertising, up 54% from a year earlier. Ads pay more when Reddit knows who is looking, which is why "more signals for ad targeting" is the first reason Reddit gives for the change. US revenue per user was $13.82 in Q3, compared with $2.43 internationally, so Reddit has plenty of room to raise international revenue per user, and the test markets are outside the US.
Reddit's other stated reasons are higher engagement, protecting access to its data, and adapting to regulations. Our read is that the regulation reason ties to how Reddit is now classified in Europe and the responsibility for user content that comes with that. Reddit has not said that directly.
Reddit's own letter also states its position on AI plainly: "AI does not fulfill people's fundamental need for community." Reddit is betting on community over search traffic, and its product decisions will follow that bet.
The numbers
These are the figures that matter for a Reddit budget decision.
Reddit Q3 2026 Performance
| Metric | Q3 2026 | Change vs Q3 2025 | Why it matters to you | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Advertising revenue | $847M | +54% | Reddit's business is ads sold against logged-in users, so its product decisions will favor them. | Reddit Q3 2026 shareholder letter |
| US revenue | $718.9M | +50% | The US is not in the first test, so US visibility changes may come later than in other markets. | Reddit Q3 2026 shareholder letter |
| International revenue | $176.1M | +67% | International is where Reddit is growing fastest, and where it is testing first. | Reddit Q3 2026 shareholder letter |
| US revenue per user | $13.82 | +53% | Logged-in US users are worth far more to Reddit than international visitors today. | Reddit Q3 2026 shareholder letter |
| International revenue per user | $2.43 | +32% | Moving international visitors to logged-in accounts is how Reddit closes that gap. | Reddit Q3 2026 shareholder letter |
| Business decision-makers visiting Reddit | 20M+ | Not reported | B2B buyers are on Reddit, and the ones who stay will be logged in. | Reddit Q3 2026 shareholder letter |
One caution on the last row: Reddit reports the 20 million figure without a method, so treat it as Reddit's own claim rather than an audited count.
Reddit as an SEO channel is losing its value
If your Reddit plan is built on threads ranking in Google, plan for that value to shrink.
A Reddit thread ranks well partly because searchers who click it find what they need. When a searcher in a test market clicks and hits a login screen, they most likely go back to the results and pick something else, and Google most likely reads that as a result that did not help. Google's guidance on gated content adds a second risk: its paywall markup exists to "differentiate paywalled content from the practice of cloaking," and cloaking violates Google's spam policies. Nobody outside Reddit and Google knows yet how Googlebot will be treated.
Our practical estimate is that Reddit's impact on rankings could fall by as much as 75% within a couple of months in markets where the wall is live, with AI Overviews following. That is an estimate, not a measured figure, and the US may see the change later.
Reddit's value as an SEO channel came from fast growth in logged-out visitors, the people who read a thread without signing in. In Q3 2023, Reddit averaged 31.3 million logged-out daily visitors. By Q3 2026, it averaged 76.8 million, about 2.5 times as many, while logged-in visitors grew 54%. In November 2025, Reddit CEO Steve Huffman said about half of Reddit's traffic came from Google. The table below shows how the logged-out audience, the group the login wall affects, grew over four years.
Reddit Daily Active Users | Q3 2023–2026
| Q3 metric | Q3 2023 | Q3 2024 | Q3 2025 | Q3 2026 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Daily active uniques | 66.0M | 97.2M | 116.0M | 130.3M |
| Logged-in daily active uniques | 34.7M | 44.1M | 50.2M | 53.5M |
| Logged-out daily active uniques | 31.3M | 53.1M | 65.8M | 76.8M |
| Logged-out share of daily activity | 47% | 55% | 57% | 59% |
| US logged-out daily active uniques | 15.3M | 26.7M | 28.5M | 27.3M |

The decline started before the login wall. Huffman has described it in Reddit's own updates over the last two years.
Reddit Search Visibility and SEO Timeline
| Date | What Reddit reported | What it means for your SEO plan | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| February 2025 | A late-2024 Google algorithm change made Reddit's search visibility volatile, mainly for logged-out users. | November 2025 | External search was "basically flat," and about half of Reddit's traffic came from Google. | Reddit's search growth had stalled a year before the login wall. | Search Engine Roundtable |
| August 2026 | Shares fell more than 20% after Q2 results. Huffman said businesses and publishers were still looking for the win-win that traditional search used to provide. | Reddit's CEO was already linking weaker search traffic to Google's AI Overviews. | Free Press Journal |
| October 2026 | Search referrals were down meaningfully in Q3 and falling by more than 1 million per week in October. For your team, the practical question is how many of your target keywords show a Reddit thread on page one today. Those positions are the ones most likely to open up as Reddit's results lose ground in the test markets, and they are where content on your own site has the best chance to move in.
Reddit as an AI search source will decline more slowly
AI tools that pay Reddit keep access. The ones that do not pay lose it.
Google and OpenAI license Reddit's data, so Reddit content will most likely stay in their training data, and their tools may keep reading it when they answer questions. Engines without a license lose access first. Over time, citations of Reddit will most likely fall, because content behind a login is less useful for real-time answers. Even when a licensed tool still cites a Reddit thread, a buyer who clicks the citation in a test market will meet a login screen, which is a poor experience for a professional buyer and reflects on the brand that sent them there.
It helps to separate the two ways AI tools use Reddit. Training is how a model learns before it is released, from a large body of text that includes Reddit's archive of over 27 billion posts and comments. Grounding is when an AI tool reads live pages at the moment it answers a question. Training runs on licensed data in large batches. Grounding depends on whether the tool can reach the page when the question is asked, and that is where the login wall matters.
Reddit has spent two years sorting AI companies into those that pay and those that do not. In February 2024, Reuters reported that Google signed a licensing deal with Reddit worth about $60 million per year. In May 2024, OpenAI and Reddit announced a data partnership. In July 2024, Reddit changed its robots.txt file, the file that tells crawlers what they may read, to block crawlers that would not agree to keep its data out of AI training, and Bing and DuckDuckGo soon returned few or no Reddit results. In October 2025, Reddit sued Perplexity and three data-scraping firms, alleging they took its content from Google's results without a license.
AI Tools and Reddit Citation Outlook
| AI tool type | Access to Reddit after the login wall | What a buyer sees on a click in test markets | Likely direction for Reddit citations |
|---|---|---|---|
| Licensed partners (Google, OpenAI) | Training continues under license; live reading may continue | Login screen | Slow decline |
| Tools that rely on search engine results | Falls as Reddit's rankings fall | Login screen | Moderate decline |
| Unlicensed tools | Blocked | Login screen | Fastest decline |
AI tools were never a large source of visitors for Reddit. In November 2025, Huffman said AI chatbots were "not a traffic driver today." Reddit's value in AI search was in what the answer said, not in clicks back to the thread. For your plan, the useful measure is whether AI answers about your category still draw on Reddit, and whether they name your brand, tracked by engine and by market.
Reddit as a community channel may get stronger
The people who stay on Reddit are the ones who meant to be there.
Logged-in daily users grew 7% in Q3 to 53.5 million. These are people who come back on purpose and take part in discussions, and a login wall does not change that. Reddit will most likely put more of its product and moderation effort into this group, because it is where Reddit earns its revenue. A brand that answers questions, shares useful detail, and stays present in the right communities is talking to a more engaged audience than before, even if that audience is smaller.
Decide by what you use Reddit for
Each use of Reddit now calls for a different decision.
Reddit Strategy: What Changes and What to Do
| How you use Reddit | What changes | What to do | What to measure |
|---|---|---|---|
| Threads meant to rank in Google | Clicks lead to a login screen in test markets, and rankings will most likely drop | Stop new spend aimed at ranking and move the budget to content on your own site | Reddit share of your ranking keywords, by market |
| Threads meant to get cited in AI answers | Licensed engines may keep citing them, while others lose access | Keep existing threads and put new effort into sources that stay open | AI citation share by engine and by market |
| Brand presence for AI training | Licensed partners keep access, but human reach shrinks | Keep it light and judge it on cost, because the payoff is hard to prove | Brand mentions in AI answers over time |
| Community participation | The audience gets smaller, but more engaged | Keep or grow the effort, with named people from your team taking part | Conversations, direct messages, and qualified leads that name Reddit |
"Your Reddit plan has two halves now. The half built for search is shrinking, and the half built for people is not."
The Camino5 Content Authority Audit scores how easily a page could be replaced by someone else's, which helps you decide what to publish on your own site as Reddit visibility declines.
How to start today
List every Reddit activity your team runs and tag each one as search visibility, AI citation, training presence, or community, because each one now needs a different decision.
Pull Reddit's share of your ranking keywords and AI citations by market, so you have a baseline before the test markets change.
Pause new Reddit spend aimed at rankings, and move that budget to content on your own site that answers the same questions.
Keep the community work, assign it to named people on your team, and report it on conversations and leads rather than on rankings.
This story is moving quickly, and some of it may change within days, so revisit the plan when Reddit names its test markets.
What this could mean for 2027
If the test outside the US becomes a global rollout, 2027 is most likely the year Reddit stops working as a shortcut to search visibility. Logged-out traffic, which made up 59% of Reddit's daily activity in Q3 2026, will most likely shrink, and Reddit's rankings will shrink with it. Google and OpenAI will most likely keep training on Reddit under license, so its influence on AI answers will fade more slowly than its rankings. The positions Reddit gives up in search results will go to sites that stay open, and that includes your own site if it answers the same questions well. Reddit itself will most likely be smaller, more logged in, and more focused on community and ads. For your team, that means planning 2027 search budgets around content you own, and treating Reddit as a place to take part in conversations rather than a place to rank.
