  • For the average user seeking functionality, an AI agent is essentially an AI with a specific purpose, designed and taught by the user to achieve a desired outcome or perform specific tasks. Creating a custom GPT with tailored instructions is considered a sufficient definition of an agent from this perspective. However, from a technical standpoint, a true AI agent involves more complex architecture, such as utilizing API calls to access models like ChatGPT or Llama, combining them with multiple call protocols (MCP), and potentially incorporating observational layers for transparency. If an agent is forced to work outside its designed scope, its output can degrade rapidly. This means that while an agent provides consistency, it lacks the inherent adaptability and potential for growth that a human brings to a team.

If the task is robust, requires repetition, and is something you would traditionally hire someone for, then exploring an agent is a good idea. If the goal is simply to save some time or gain insights on a smaller, less critical problem, a custom GPT or other AI tools might suffice.
